The Short Version

What the crown is, and why it fails first

The crown is the sloped slab of concrete or mortar that sits on top of the chimney and surrounds the flue. It works like a roof for your masonry: it sheds rain outward and away from the brick below.

Because it takes the full force of sun, rain and North Texas temperature swings, the crown is almost always the first part of a chimney to crack. Many older crowns were also built too thin, with no overhang, so they were destined to fail early.

Once it cracks, water has a path straight into the chimney. That is why a crown repair is one of the cheapest jobs you can do that prevents one of the most expensive ones, a full chimney rebuild.

Know The Difference

Seal, resurface, or rebuild

Not every cracked crown needs the same fix. The extent of the damage decides the approach, and we recommend the least invasive one that will actually last.

Warning Signs

Signs your crown needs attention

Most crown damage hides on the roof, but the effects show up where you can see them. If any of these sound familiar, book an inspection.

Why It Matters

A small crack invites a big bill

Water is the number one enemy of masonry. Once it gets past a cracked crown it soaks into the brick and mortar, then freezes and expands through every North Texas cold snap, splitting the chimney apart from the inside. The Chimney Safety Institute of America calls water penetration the most common cause of chimney deterioration. Sealing or rebuilding the crown early is the fix that keeps a $400 repair from becoming a $6,000 rebuild.
